Night Shelter
Get seven churches to take one night a week and a group of volunteers at each church and it’s possible to give shelter and food to people who would otherwise sleep rough. In essence, that’s how the night shelter works.
The Night Shelter is co-ordinated by a charity operating out of the Chelsea Methodist church in the Kings Road. There are now 14 churches on the circuit, 7 from October to January, and 7 through February and March. St Barnabas does the January/March periods.
The volunteers for our venue come from our church and the task is to cook an evening meal for up to 70 people, spend time with our guests and clear away. Volunteers do not stay overnight. This is done by specially trained staff from the charity. A second set of volunteers come in the morning to cook breakfast between 6am and 7am. For legal reasons only 35 guests can stay in the venues. Sadly, the others can only eat and then leave.
Our guests are for the most part, polite and grateful, and the volunteers find the experience of spending time in the company of our guests, both rewarding and good fun.
